While Bishop V. Lyons was away on tour with the youth visiting Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), I had the opportunity to sit in the host chair and host Talk at Night for the week on WLLV Gospel 101.9 FM.
On this episode, we welcomed a special guest, Tee, a mental-health specialist and counselor, who joined me for an important conversation about mental health and how it affects the Black community and our community as a whole.
We talked about the realities people can face after being released from prison and returning to the streets and their families. The conversation touched on mental-health treatment, taking prescribed medication, adjusting after incarceration, finding the right support system, and the difficulties some people experience trying to rebuild their lives.
Antonio “A.B.” Brown joined us later in the show, along with Will Smith, who spoke from the booth and added his perspective to the discussion.
We also had callers and contributors including Wanda McIntyre and Carolyn Marie, who called into the show and joined the conversation. Their participation helped highlight the changes that need to happen within our communities.
Another major topic was being proactive with our children. We talked about spending real time with our kids, taking them places, exposing them to opportunities outside of their everyday surroundings, and giving them experiences that can open their minds to what is possible.
That connected directly with Bishop V. Lyons being on the road introducing young people to HBCUs and showing them educational opportunities for their futures.
This was a night of real conversation about mental health, incarceration, our children, family, education, and strengthening our community.
